Exercise: Setting a Good Example for Your Kids

By age one, our Small Shadow was already able to mimic so many things, from kissy-faces to clapping. It’s amazing how babies develop so very quickly and pick up on parental traits that we don’t even realize we have. When the Munchkin started to make tongue clicking noises, it was cute, and then I realized it was a sound that I make in the grocery store when I’m trying to make a decision.

Our quirks, big and small, are absorbed by our kids.  So are our habits. While they are in absorption mode, it is imperative to set good examples. A good habit to incorporate is exercise. Granted, we can’t take our Small Sponges to the gym and get ‘em started on mini-reps, but we can tie exercise into our daily routines with our kids. Going for a walk or doing some silly dancing are fun things that toddlers enjoy. When taking kids to the park, join in the fun instead of just watching from the grass the whole time (but do take some time to relax). Play sports like tag with wee ones and basketball with bigger buddies. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Until they can try out their first training wheels, it’s a great idea to get a Baby Bike Trailer and pack up the infants to get some fresh air.

While kids are busy growing and becoming their own little person, they are also a mini reflection of their parents. There is no better time than while they are saturating everything to give them healthy habits to absorb.

Thanks for this article, heidi. With childhood obesity rates sky rocketing in recent decades, it has become more important than ever that we get our kids outside, playing and exercising. It is essential that we set a good examply for them. People need to purchase bikes and sports equipment and swing sets for their children. Just getting your children off the couch and outside is half the battle. Thanks again for this article.
