Nutrition During Pregnancy: Guide to Eating Healthy for Two

One of the most important decisions that I made during my pregnancy was to eat nutritiously. I realized that the baby and I were eating everything together, and healthy took on a whole new perspective. With so much information out there about what vitamins to take and what foods to avoid, it got overwhelming. Between that, craving McDonalds, and the seemingly never-big-enough portions, food choices were not always easy….making sure I ate enough of the right stuff but not too much of anything the baby couldn’t handle required its own monitoring system.

Here are a few honest things I did eat through my pregnancy. (Keep in mind that I am not a doctor, and you should consult your doctor before making any decisions regarding your pregnancy diet.) My motto throughout the 40 weeks was “moderation.” I did chose to sacrifice two of my favorites: hot dogs and sushi. At our favorite sushi restaurant, it was torture to order miso soup and salad while my husband savored the tuna. The good thing was that there was always an alternative. I needed some quick fixes for work, so I asked my doctor for tips, and he said that one deli sandwich a week was ok. When I did have that weekly sandwich, I opted for lean cuts of meat, wheat bread, and no mayo. I will confess: I drank one cup of coffee every day. Just one. And it was good.

Of course, getting ready for the baby took enough time. I was still clocking in at the office full-time. Between working and preparing for her arrival, there was not enough time to plan each meal, prepare shopping lists, and plan everything to the last detail. Sites like BabyFit.com and BabyCenter.com were wonderful aids and provided easy to use schedules for what to eat and when. They even put together printable shopping lists and daily meal plans that were easy to use for a tired working mommy-to-be. After hearing the horror stories of horse-pill sized prenatal vitamins, I was really delighted when my doctor said that Nature Made had the right stuff. The pills were not un-swallowable and didn’t carry a bad aftertaste. These are perfect to continue to take after giving birth throughout nursing as well. I bought a huge bottle knowing that they would not go to waste.

Our baby girl arrived healthy and happy, and I have maintained a healthy-eating attitude since her birth. I don’t have it all together with organized meal-plans, but I do always try to make the healthier choice when it comes to food. It’s not always easy, but when there’s a choice, I try to make the nutritious one.
